Menino Supports Occupy Boston, Calls For Congressional Hearings

BOSTON (CBS) - The folks at "Occupy Boston" picked up a big ideological ally on Thursday in Mayor Tom Menino, who called for congressional hearings on the issue of "economic inequality."

"The Occupy movement is an alarm ringing, and like a fire alarm, it can be noisy and disruptive. We can't just keep on pointing at the alarm. We need to think for how to save the building," said Menino.

Since Occupy Boston moved into Dewey Square about three weeks ago, Mayor Menino has had to face the real faces and hear the real concerns of real people.

"The middle class has been stuck, and they feel it. Economic inequality is at an historic high. Economic mobility is lower than many industrialized countries," said Menino.

Menino called for congressional hearings on the subject of economic inequity, and called on business and political leaders in Boston to work to create a more equitable environment.
