Ference, Kelly To Share Bruins Second 'A'

BOSTON (CBS) - With Mark Recchi retiring after last season, there had been much debate about who would be named the Boston Bruins second assistant captain.

On the day they are set to raise their 2010-11 Stanley Cup banner, the Bruins announced which player (well, players) will get to wear the "A" on their jersey.

Defenseman Andrew Ference will get "A" for home games, with forward Chris Kelly donning it on the road, coach Claude Julien announced Thursday.

The two will switch for the second half of the season.

Known as a grinder on defense, Ference has been with the Bruins since 2007. He is a hard-nosed player and is not afraid to stand up for his teammates. He made news during the Bruins playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens, when he delivered an "unintentional bird" after scoring a goal in Game 4.

Kelly was acquired from Ottawa before the trade deadline last season, and solidified the Bruins third line. He scored five goals and had eight assists during the playoffs.

Defenseman Zdeno Chara has served as the Bruins captain since signing with the team in 2006. Forward Patrice Bergeron wears the other "A" for Boston.
