CAMBRIDGE (AP) — Matthew Stuart, who helped his brother Charles cover up the shooting death of his pregnant wife in 1989 in a killing that inflamed racial tensions in Boston, has died, authorities said Sunday.

Carole DiMaiti Stuart was shot to death more than two decades ago and the child she delivered after she was shot died days later. Her husband, Charles Stuart, blamed the crime on a black man, heightening racial strife in Boston. Police focused on a paroled convict, William Bennett, as a suspect. He later sued the city after being cleared.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Doug Cope reports.

Matthew Stuart admitted to police a few months after the shooting that he helped hide the gun believed to have been used by Charles Stuart to kill his wife. Days after his brother confessed, Charles Stuart plunged to his death from a bridge.

Matthew Stuart’s family was notified of his death and his body was transferred to the medical examiner, Cambridge police spokesman Daniel Riviello said Sunday. He provided no details.

The Middlesex district attorney’s office does not comment on non-suspicious deaths, a spokeswoman said.

In 1992, Matthew Stuart pleaded guilty to conspiracy, possession of a firearm and three other charges in exchange for three to five years in state prison. He was released in 1995 and placed on probation.

In May 1997, Revere police arrested Stuart on drug charges after police allegedly saw him and three other men distributing cocaine. He pleaded innocent to drug charges and he was returned to prison for violating his probation.

His attorney appealed and prosecutors dropped the drug charges. The following September, a Suffolk Superior Court judge formally ended Stuart’s probation, ruling that the evidence was not strong enough to consider him in violation of probation.

A sad end to a sad story. Too bad his brother didn’t believe in divorce…but thought murder and almost destroying an entire neighborhood with false accusations was an okay way to avoid parenthood and alimony.~While dragging his little brother down with him….just plain sad.. RIP Matthew..

Said the person who never ever had to make the choice.
It’s not an easy way out at all.
I love when internet tough people assume it’s so easy.
You (like most people) would scream, claw, and cry to avoid death at all costs.
So save your false bravado for another board

        HUH ????

I don’t really care how bad his decision to jump from the Tobin was.
        Really don’t

To me, he was a chicken a$$ piece of you know what who didn’t have the guts
        to face the music

I will tell you this, had I been on the bridge that day and young Charles had problems deciding, I would have been happy to “push” him in the right direction.

He didn’t jump off the bridge as reported.

I actually feel for the guy. he paid the price for his brother’s crime. he confessed to helping his brother hide the weapon. He did not pull the trigger. His brother probably threatened him. people like charles tend to be bullies and would threaten their own family into helping him. This guy gets out of jail and ends up in a homeless shelter, then dead. I think it is pretty sad. He finally confessed, went to jail for it (as he should) and his brother jumped taking the coward’s way out.

The saddest part of this story is the fact that too many white people believed the original story. Let’s not forget that.

Nobody’s perfect, and that goes for groups just as much as it does for individuals. I was in town back in 1989 when it happened and have always been under the impression that the phrase “days after his brother confessed, Charles Stuart plunged to his death from a bridge” is just a polite way of including the possibility that Charles didn’t JUMP off the Tobin bridge, Matthew may have TOSSED him off it. Had he been my brother I might have, but then he and I never got along anyway, German that we are.

Hey, good post. I taught at Stuarts HS and never believed he jumped. No one saw him! The news shows his body coming out of the water w/jean jacket, jeans, sneakers still on and intact. That fall would be like landing on concrete!! A theory is that his lungs were full of swimming pool water from some motel or wherever, and his body was placed under the bridge.
