Escapee From R.I. Prison Found 20 Miles Away In Mass.

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - An inmate who escaped from a Rhode Island prison has been found 20 miles away in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts State Police say 27-year-old Jose Rodriguez was doing yard work Thursday afternoon at the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston, R.I., when he escaped. Authorities say Rodriguez returned a weed whacker to a shed, then fled.

On Friday, police got information that Rodriguez may be in a house across the state border in Fall River. When police entered the home, they say Rodriguez jumped out a window and tried to run away. They say he had nearly $3,000 on him when he was caught.

Rodriguez is charged with being a fugitive from justice. Massachusetts police will work with Rhode Island officials to have Rodriguez returned.

He'd been serving a 42-month sentence for assault.
