Patriots Claim Guard Mark Wetterer

BOSTON (CBS) - The New England Patriots claimed rookie guard Mark Wetterer off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals on Wednesday.

To make room on the roster the Patriots released safety Ross Ventrone.

The 6-5, 319 pound Wetterer was originally signed by Cincinnati as a rookie free agent out of Louisville, but was waived on Tuesday. The 22-year old started 28 games at Louisville and was named a 2010 First-Team All-Big East player.

Wetterer is the fifth guard on the Patriots current roster, along with Logan Mankins, Rich Orhnberger, Dan Connolly and Thomas Austin. The move is likely to shore up some depth at the position for the preseason.

Ventrone was signed as a rookie free agent in April 2010, but was released in August. He was signed to the Patriots practice squad in October.
