BOSTON (CBS) – Downtown Boston was buzzing Wednesday night as several helicopters practiced low-altitude military exercises over the city.
Under the cover of darkness, five helicopters flew over Boston Harbor and began darting in between tall buildings in the Financial District.
Nearby residents not only heard the choppers, they felt them.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Mark Katic reports
“It sounded almost like thunder, it scared my dog,” said one resident. “I saw them I think at 75 State Street. It’s tough to tell, but they were within 30 or 40 feet of that building. The lights in the building were off, so they knew what was going on. The lights on the helicopters were off and they each came in one at a time. Once they stopped that, they turned the lights in the building back on.”
The city did give a heads up last week about the exercise and Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis says that’s about all they could do.
“We got several dozen calls over the course of the evening making inquiries as to what was happening,” said Davis. “There’s obviously a balance here letting people know there’s military training going on but not letting them know when or where.”
Davis told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 that those military exercises were scheduled to continue through Friday but would not take place in the downtown area.
