Phantom Gourmet Visits Rowes Wharf Sea Grille In Boston

BOSTON (CBS) - Rowes Wharf Sea Grille in downtown Boston is a chic waterfront eatery with stellar harbor views. Tucked into the Boston Harbor Hotel, the restaurant can't quite shake its "lobby" vibe despite the sunny patio, lighted blue-sky ceiling, and likenesses of tall ships everywhere you look.

From raw bar to fried fare to gourmet flights of fancy, the menu is a fish fanatic's dream. First, Phantom whaled on a coneful of crispy crab rangoons loaded with molten shellfish-studded cream cheese. Decent lobster ravioli needed another layer of flavor-or contrasting texture-to bump it from fine to fantastic.

Next, the roasted lobster was flawless. It was a two-pound Maine beauty plated with fresh-scraped corn, corn pudding, and velvety butter sauce. Seared scallops boasted an expertly caramelized crust, served over creamy lentils.

Strawberry-rhubarb crisp was summertime on a plate, sweet berries and buttery topping balanced by the rhubarb's assertive brightness.

The "Passionfruit bomb" didn't quite bomb in terms of taste, but it wasn't the explosion of flavor Phantom craved.

Portions range from modest to hearty, but the plentiful bread basket helps bridge the gap.  Service was somewhat stilted and old-school, yet solid. The elegant space was in ship shape, from bow to stern.

With starters in the teens and entrees in the and entrees in the thirties, expect to shell out some clams.

Phantom gives Rowes Wharf Sea Grille a total of 79 (Phantom approved).
