BOSTON (CBS) — Romaine lettuce is a supermarket staple, but basic salads can get boring.  Fresh Grocer Tony Tantillo has some suggestions on how to spice up your romaine.

A great way to prepare romaine lettuce in the summer is on the grill.

Put a leaf on the grill with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper, and enjoy the extra flavor it adds to a salad.

Summertime romaine lettuce is smaller than it would be in the winter, but the flavor and freshness are still there.

Make sure to select a nice, green bunch, free of any browning, and check to be certain that the leaves don’t overlap.
