TAUNTON (AP) — A Massachusetts city has approved a proposal to build a “Global War on Terrorism” memorial to honor the newest generation of servicemen and women.
The Historic District Commission of Taunton gave approval to build the memorial on Church Green, a spot in the city’s historic district that also features the city’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The new 6-foot-tall black granite monument will feature the silhouette of a kneeling male soldier and standing female soldier honoring a fallen comrade in front of a battlefield cross.
It will also include two granite walkways, two benches and a series of flags representing the branches of military service.
Organizers plan to begin a fund-raising campaign to collect nearly $10,000 needed to build the monument.
