Doctors Warn Flip Flops Can Be Damaging To Feet

BOSTON (CBS) - Although they are a sure sign of summer, flip flops can pose serious health consequences to your feet.

Once used simply as beach wear, flip flops are now often worn daily due to their ease and convenience. However, with researchers finding that the flimsy soles change the way the wearer walks, doctors are urging people to cut down on the damaging footwear.

"Fasciitis pain, tendonitis, [and] besides blisters, you also get a bad rash," says podiatrist Dr. Neil Frankle. "[Flip flops are] good for the podiatry business. Let's put it that way."

According to Frankle, the most destructive flip flops are the inexpensive rubber styles that are too commonly worn in place of sneakers or sturdy shoes in the summer.

"They are flimsy," says Frankle. "There is no support whatsoever. They are made out of rubber…so there's no breathing. [Also] the material is a rubber plastic and that causes blisters and irritation."

Frankle does note that not all flip flops are damaging though. For the least destruction, the doctor recommends finding a sandal with a stable sole and good cushioning. The American Podiatric Association has a list of recommended brands on its website.

Most experts also agree that the sandals do not need to be abandoned all together. Instead, wearers should make sure to wear supportive shoes for long distance walking and keep the flip flops for the beach.
