Police Arrest Man Behind Several Newbury Street Robberies

BOSTON (CBS) - Police have arrested a serial robber who has been hitting stores up and down Newbury Street over the past several months.

A pair of sharp-eyed Boston police officers caught 42-year-old Antonio Ramon of Boston before he could strike again. They said he was dressed in black and carrying an number of tools with him as he tried to break into another Newbury Street store.

"Obviously a small Leatherman, his gloves, black shirt. He also had black cargo pants on, head lamp," said Det. Michael Conley of the Boston Police Department.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.

Officers said since May, Ramon has been scoping out several high end stores in the Newbury Street area, but only targeting those without any alarm systems in place. Ramon did all of his illegal activity between midnight and 5 a.m., police said.

On Wednesday morning though, officers found him jumping from an air conditioner in the public alley.

"They seen a figure drop, approached him. He was very nervous, sweating profusely. They noticed a bag up on top of an air conditioning unit." said Det. Conley. "And he actually made admissions that he was attempting to break into a BLVD Boston."

Ramon faces a number of charges including breaking an entering. He was arraigned and ordered held on $15,000 cash bail. He is due back in court next month.

Police say Ramon may have been involved in at least eight other break-ins including one at a store that lost $56,000 in merchandise.
