Hiker Rescued In NH's White Mountains
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A National Guard helicopter was called in to lift a New Hampshire man to safety after he slipped and hurt his knee while hiking in the White Mountain National Forest.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department says 54-year-old Allen Gould of Conway couldn't walk after hurting his knee at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday while hiking Mount Adams. A hiking companion called 911, but Fish and Game officials decided to call on the National Guard after determining that a land rescue would have taken hours.
The Army National Guard sent a Black Hawk helicopter, which hovered just above the tree tops as it lowered rescuers to the ground and then lifted them and the injured hiker back up.
Officials say Gould was taken to the Androscoggin Valley Hospital for treatment.
