2 Killed In Andover Crash; Woman Charged With Drunk Driving

ANDOVER (AP) – State police say a second man has died following a highway crash in which a motorist was charged with drunken driving.

Police said Sunday that Joseph A. Coppola of Malden died Saturday. He was 57.

He was a passenger in a Chevrolet Blazer driven by 62-year-old Francis O’Hanley of Saugus who died shortly after the crash, which occurred Saturday just before 7 a.m.

A 21-year-old Lawrence woman was been charged with drunken driving. State police said Shayna Fernandez was speeding when her Acura collided with the Blazer in the northbound lanes of Interstate 93 in Andover.

State police said Fernandez, who was not injured, was arrested at the scene.

Fernandez is due to be arraigned in Lawrence District Court on Monday on a charge of operating under the influence, and police say additional charges will be filed.

21 years old and because of one bad choice her life will never be the same & 2 people’s lives are over. Very sad

    1. incredulous says:

I doubt it was one bad choice, but rather a string of bad decisions in which she did not consider the gravity of her actions, or more likely disregarded them, which after repeatedly getting away with them they finally caught up to her.

I read somewhere that this accident happened at 7am….can anyone confirm this?

    1. Mary O'Brien says:

It happened a little before 7 am. I passed the accident scene just as police were arriving.

  3. Jean says:

Just another low level crime per Deval Patrick. He should explain that to the victims families.

WHY once again,,,,, WHY drink so early in the morning,,, 21 so young and so reckless… Drinking and driving NEVER mix… I wish many would see the rational behind drinking and then getting behind of the wheel of a vehicle… It is hardly worth the trip…. Such a tradgey… such a waste, Please if you must drink,,,, DO NOT drive …. please be very safe and think not only of your self, But please please please think of others , your family , kids, sisters , brothers, mothers and fathers, LIFE is so precious, Think before you drink. then dont drive…. BE SAFE

    1. Lori says:

emom, it is not that she was drinking so early in the morning. More likely she never stopped drinking from the night before.

Anyone who is driving drunk at 7:a.m. should be locked up without an accident taking place. This clown, following her trial, should be given at least 10 years in prison, period. Never mind how she ruined “her life” because I really don’t care but she has taken the lives of 2 innocent human beings and for that she should be given the maximum sentence.

    1. T says:

I agree I dont care her life is ruined she killed 2 people and their families lives will never be the same this is a accident that could have been avoided., but people are stupid taking away her license wont do anything she’ll still drive because thats how stupid people are…Senseless

its more likely that she had ‘waited out’ the night somewhere and hit the road at 6 from a party or a friends house. She was probably still legally intoxicated and at that point overtired, causing her carelessness and impairing her judgement. Its very sad for the victims families and for the girl involved. Their lives will never be the same due to her poor judgement. Young people need to remember why the laws are there in the first place, rather than simply concerning themselves with ‘not getting caught’.

Another week, another tradgey!!! Meanwhile the idiots on Beacon Hill when they are there are working on More important things. Things like passing a law that you can have your operation filmed as long as you pay for it… Another week, and another week of Nothing being done to protect the citizens of the state!!!!

  8. emom says:

Tragedy indeed , yet again so many feel for the one that causes it… WHY , once again comes to mind… This young adult,, felt the need to get plastered, stay up all night , exhausted and still very intoxicated get behind the wheel and drive.. Only to take the lives of two others… Yes charges should be given,,, If we allow no charges we then once again condone DRINKING AND DRIVING,, the next time it happens are we to just simply allow them to walk since if may be their FIRST offense,,,, What kind of message are we sending to others, what’s the message to the drunk,,,that you get off now just don’t get caught the next time… sure look at all those that get arrested over and over again like 15 times later.. Like that’s ok….
MY GOD 2 lives were taken, are we to brush this under some carpet and just turn away and not think about it… OH SAD.

  9. emom says:

WHY ARE TEENS, YOUNG ADULTS AND EVEN ADULTS SO STUPID FOOLISH WHEN DRINKING GETS INVOLVED, IS IT TRUELY WORTH IT,,,,,,,,, YOU DRINK YOU HAVE ABSOLUTLY NO CONTROL OF YOUR OWN SELF,,,, AND YOU ARE TRUELY A SELFISH PERSON IF YOU DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE WELL BEING OF OTHERS,,,,,IF YOU DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR SELFS FIND A SPOT STAY PUT AND DRINK TO OBLIVION………….. BUT FOR GOD SAKE DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT PICKING THOSE KEYS UP AND DRIVE.. OTHERS VALUE THEIR LIVES,, EVEN THOU YOU MIGHT NOT……SELFISH DRUNKS.
