Salty Sick, Tek Behind Plate Against Yankees

BOSTON (CBS) - Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is being checked out in a New York hospital with an illness.

Manager Terry Francona said Saltalamacchia was sent to the hospital as a precaution, to rule out anything besides the flu.

Saltalamacchia will be unavailable for the Red Sox game against the Yankees Wednesday night, meaning Jason Varitek is behind the plate for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.

The Red Sox are without a backup catcher, and may be forced to make a roster move before the game.

"There's a chance, it would be nice to have a backup catcher," Francona said.

If no move is made, Drew Sutton could serve as the backup.

Saltalamacchia was 0-for-2 with two walks in the Red Sox 6-4 win Tuesday night. He is hitting .236 with five home runs for the season.
