Mass. Holds Free Fishing Weekend, No License Needed
BOSTON (AP) -- Massachusetts is encouraging residents to try out fishing this weekend by making it free.
Recreational anglers usually need a permit to fish in the state's fresh and saltwater areas, but no license is required Saturday and Sunday.
The state Department of Fish and Game, as well as the Division of Marine Fisheries, offer a free fishing weekend every year to get people hooked. This year, they're holding their events on the same day.
The free fishing only applies to state-controlled waters. State biologist Matt Ayer tells the Cape Cod Times the aim of the weekend is to get people to try fishing, develop an appreciation of its benefits and spur them to buy a permit.
All fishing license fees support fishing-related initiatives.
