Prosecutors Allege DiMasi's Financial Troubles Motive For Scheme

BOSTON (CBS) - At the corruption trial of former Massachusetts House Speaker Sal DiMasi on Monday, prosecutors hinted at a "motive" for the alleged kickback scheme said to have netted DiMasi tens of thousands of dollars.

A mortgage broker testified Monday that DiMasi's credit scores were too low for him to qualify, under favorable terms, for refinancing a mortgage on his North End condo in 2006. In their opening statements, prosecutors called DiMasi a desperate man trying to support an extravagant lifestyle.

Lawyers for DiMasi said they object to giving the media access the former house speaker's financial statements. The papers were submitted when he won public funds to pay for his lawyers.

On Tuesday, an employee of co-defendant Richard Vitale is set to testify. She allegedly wrote a $250,000 line of credit for the DiMasi just a few years after Vitale had given him another large loan.
