BOSTON (CBS) – Bullying of children with special needs is becoming a growing problem.
Bullying aimed at those who are the most vulnerable, children with special needs, is becoming more and more pervasive. Sheryl Young is CEO of AbilityPath.org, an online hub for the special needs community. She says the bullying problem affecting those kids with special needs has become a silent epidemic.
20-year-old actress Lauren Potter, who has Down syndrome, is one of the cast of the TV show “Glee.” She says she has been a victim of bullying. She says she’s also been made fun of while out shopping.
Sheryl Young says parents and teachers can help stop this bullying, but kids themselves are an important influence on their peers.
Young say this bullying can have lasting effects.
