NH Lawmaker Resigns Over ‘Mentally Disabled’ Comment

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A 91-year-old freshman Republican lawmaker who suggested the mentally disabled should be shipped to Siberia has resigned from the New Hampshire House.

State Rep. Martin Harty of Barrington said in his resignation letter Monday that he was sorry his “big mouth caused this
furor.” He said with all the “slightly unfavorable publicity” he couldn’t be effective.

Harty’s comments came to light last week during testimony at a hearing on proposed cuts to the state budget. When confronted about the comment, Harty was unapologetic. He said he was kidding around with a female caller who supported funding for the homeless when he raised the issue of eugenics and the world’s population growth.

He said he didn’t know what to do with mentally disturbed people and suggested renting a spot off Russia.

where are all the right-wing trolls who usually support this kind of lawmaker? Did this one finally jump the shark?

91? What would have been the over or under for him making his full term anyway.

Any elected official who makes a comment condemning any member of the human race should be censored. He has forgotten that we are one for all and all for one. In a democracy, a jury judges the misdeads of a human being and punishes them according to a law the jury agrees one has broken. Offenders are still as human as a weak, distaughtened or deseased individuals in our great society. We shoud never allow our leaders to infer that exile is a solution to a physical diability. Elected officials sarcasm and humor must be weighed with oblective criticism. Elected official are not allowed to slander people and then say “it was a joke.” whether or not they have a silver cross or a congressional medal of honor. A public official saying we should send afflicted people to some sort of leper colony can be contrued as his opinion on the subject. Thanks for resigning. He may not have intended to offend anyone but he did. An apology would have been in order. Resignation without an one lets the offensive language stand.
