Curious Whether The U.S. Is Socialist?

By Ken Tucci, WBZ-TV

Will from Hubbardston Declared his Curiosity to WBZ-TV:

When I was in high school, I told the principal that the USSR and the US were trading places (1984).  The former USSR has turned, and we are almost at their former level.  With the healthcare program in Ma. and almost federally, aren’t we a socialist country?  Isn’t that a closer step to communism?  – Will, Hubbardston

Here’s the definition of socialism from :

“a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.”

It seems to me the US is a long way from being socialist, though some people certainly think we’re moving in that direction.

Some people criticized Social Security and Medicare way back when as been big steps toward socialism…and personally…I’m looking forward to having those available to me.

Your opinions?  And please be polite.

We have to stop using the term “socialist’ so loosely. It’s used by the right wing to make democrats seem subversive. Caring for the elderly and those struggling in life is not a socialist ideal. It’s an American ideal. When did an American patriot become an uncaring individual only interested in business and tax cuts for the wealthy?

We have noticeably changed the direction re: governmental involvement, etc.. That is no doubt the reason for the question anyway. LEFT WINGERS need to rid themselves of their demons and stop thinking they are the knights on white horses before acting indignant. You have much more to answer for than caring for the elderly and those struggling. You need to stop worrying about the rich and being resentful of business success. Too many people taking, fewer and fewer giving. Please don’t tell me which terms to use.

Great post sminma. The right has no concern about Americans who need, but can’t afford healthcare under this ridiculous system. They are very concerned about giving tax breaks to those who are wealthy though. My guess is most people fall under the former rather than the latter.

Government is not all of anything.. It is an amalgum of all forms of Government…It has to be.

When you have a president like Comrade Obama advocating the redistribution of wealth and grabbing government control over major segments of our economy like healthcare, housing, education, banking, and even the auto industry, Socialism is the ONLY way to describe it.

massman, I’m really sick of Lefties like you lying about what the Right stands for because you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. All you can do is spew hate and lies. I hope you’re proud of yourself, you intolerant you-know-what.
