WALTHAM (CBS) — Waltham snow removal took to the streets in full force Saturday, taking snow away from neighborhoods – a job they haven’t done in many winters.

“It’s pretty dramatic I haven’t had to do this since ‘97,” said Bernie McDonald with Waltham DPW.  “People are surprised to see us out here.”

People were surprised and appreciative.  Huge heaps of snow on their streets have been forcing pedestrians into the middle of the road and making it hard for drivers to see around corners.

WBZ-TV’s Alana Gomez reports.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Michael Cannistraro, who watched dump trucks clear out his driveway.  “I thought I was going to have to do more shoveling today.”

McDonald said that they plan to move more than 70,000 tons of snow out of the neighborhoods and into their snow dumps.

McDonald said the city will probably use up its snow budget by the end of the weekend.  With another mid-week storm in the forecast, work crews will have to ask for more money for the second time this winter.
