Truck Crash Closes 495 In Amesbury

AMESBURY (CBS) - Part of Interstate 495 north in Amesbury was still shut down Thursday morning because of the aftermath of a tractor-trailer accident.

One lane of traffic was getting by as of 7 a.m.

State Police Sgt. Eric Bernstein told WBZ Radio the driver, a 53-year-old man from Brunswick, Maine, swerved to avoid a spare tire in the road Wednesday night.

The truck jackknifed and hit the guardrail. The gas tanks ruptured and about 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked onto the road.

The front of the truck ended up hanging off the overpass over Route 110. The driver was not hurt.

About 200 feet of the guardrail was destroyed.  Some of it fell onto Route 110.

The truck was hauled away, but crews worked through the night to clean up the spilled fuel.
