Hingham Jewelry Store Hosts Holiday Scavenger Hunt

HINGHAM (CBS) -- Christmas is coming early at Hingham Jewelers. Owner Stacey Page is wrapping up 12 pieces of jewelry and she plans to just give away.

"No strings attached… Finders keepers," she said.

It's finders keepers because the gifts will be left at various locations around the South Shore for the next 12 days.

Clues to the hidden gifts will be posted on Facebook and Twitter. "Someone is going to find a great gift for no reason. It's just our way of saying thank you for the support," said Page. "Without them we wouldn't be here."

WBZ-TV's Sera Congi reports.

In February, two armed robbers burst into the store at closing time and forced the owners to open the safe. They made away with enough loot to nearly put the 62-year-old family store out of business. "The community… I can't say enough about the outreach, support, encouragement, emails, flowers and phone calls," said Page. "It was just overwhelming."

The first gift was found today. Holly Canny of Milton found the gift at the Derby Shoppes in Hingham.

She almost brought it to the lost and found - unaware of its meaning. "I think it really nice," she said. "Not many businesses would do that."

Page said the gifts are a gesture of thanks and a sign of victory over a difficult time.

This is not the first time Hingham Jewelers has faced adversity. Back in 1988, it was one of 16 businesses that burned to the ground in the downtown area.
