Propane Tanker Crash Spurs Evacuations

PALMER (CBS) - A tanker crash caused quite a scare in western Massachusetts Friday night.

About 150 people were evacuated from their homes in Palmer after a liquid propane tanker hit a utility pole on South Main Street, rolled over and caught fire just before 8 p.m.

No one was hurt, but several streets within a mile of the crash scene were shut down and evacuated.

Authorities decided to let the fire burn out rather than let firefighters near the tanker and the downed power lines. It did not explode.

Evacuated residents spent the night at the Converse Middle School before they were allowed to return to their homes.

There's no word yet on what caused the crash.
