BOSTON (CBS) – The Red Sox announced Thursday they will exercise their $12.5 million club option on David Ortiz for the 2011 season.

Ortiz hit .270 with 32 homers and drove in 102 runs last season after a slow start in April.

The Sox had to make their decision on whether to bring him back by midnight.

Ortiz wants a multi-year deal, which the Red Sox have not ruled out.

There has been no comment from Ortiz yet.

Well, I don’t blame him for that. Would love to see Ortiz retire as a Boston Red Sox just like Mike Lowell did.

No question this is the first step to the Red Sox returning to the post season next season. They would have been there this year without all the injuries.
