Chuck Turner Takes Stand In His Own Trial
BOSTON (CBS) - Boston city councilor Chuck Turner today threw a curve at federal prosecutors, when he took the stand and said he couldn't remember ever meeting Roxbury businessman Ron Wilburn, "I don't remember Mr. Wilburn...but I meet a lot of people."
Turner is facing federal corruption charges, after allegedly accepting a $1,000 cash bribe from Wilburn, who had been trying to obtain a liquor license for a proposed Roxbury nightclub.
In August of 2007, Wilburn turned to the FBI and agreed to set up Turner. Wilburn was equipped with a tiny video camera, and microphone and recorded a meeting with Turner. That was when the money was allegedly exchanged.
But in court today, Turner said he couldn't remember meeting Wilburn...even after seeing the FBI video.
Outside court, Turner railed against the feds, saying former U.S. Attorney Mike Sullivan should be on trial, for setting up the sting operation.
The six-term city councilor went on to say, "In my 44 years of public service, I'm the last person anyone would expect to take a bribe. But now, my reputation is ruined, no matter what the jury decides."
