'Curious': Where's Our January Thaw?CBS

We're in the heart of winter but many of us are already sick of the frigid cold and snow. When are we getting a warm up? And what happened to our January Thaw?

Pete in Ashland was Curious: "What is the average date of the traditional January Thaw? When is it predicted to happen this year? Is there a meteorological reason for this annual event or is it just random?"

WBZ's meteorologist Ken Barlow explains we typically see a January thaw right about now –- in the third week of January.

The January thaw usually lasts about five to seven days.

What defines a January thaw is temperatures above the average by about 10 degrees for several days in a row. So far this month, we haven't had more than a day of above average temperatures.

And it doesn't look like it's coming any time soon.

A cold blast will hit us this weekend dropping temperatures down into the single digits in the early-morning hours and not going above the teens at all for most areas. But the freeze won't last long this time. Sunday and Monday are the only frigid days during the next week.

Temperatures should be back up to the low 30s by Tuesday and Wednesday.

The good news is we may have a February thaw because temperatures are forecasted to be above normal during the beginning of the month.
