Traffic is has been diverted around a three-block area of 500 Washington Street.

The break created an approximate 150-foot wide sinkhole, according to the district fire chief on the scene, who told WBZ NewsRadio that his guys evacuated nine homes, almost all of them triple deckers.

Crews went from house to house checking for gas problems in the basements, in case there's any flooding.

Water service is out to a number of homes in the area.

It's expected to take crews most of the day to fix the break.
