Chelsea man struck and killed by police cruiser

WBZ-TV

Investigators say a Chelsea police cruiser's emergency lights and sirens were on when it struck and killed a pedestrian.

Authorities said 56-year-old David Burgess was apparently trying to cross Broadway on foot at about 11:15 Thursday night when he was hit by the police car.

Burgess was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police said the officer was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life threatening, and placed on administrative leave.

A spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney says the officer was en route "with active lights and sirens" to assist police from neighboring Everett, who were pursuing someone on foot.

Investigators have not yet determined the speed of the cruiser at the time of the accident.
