Kiki, one of the Franklin Park Zoo’s four female gorillas, is pregnant with her third baby.
Kiki, who turns 29 on August 23, is the mother of two female gorillas, Kira and Kimani, all of whom reside with the gorilla troop in the zoo’s Tropical Forest.
Franklin Park Zoo is planning a baby shower to be held September 10 – 12.
Throughout the three days, the Zoo will collect baby items for local non-profit, Room to Grow, which provides hundreds of expectant and new parents with parenting support and the essential items their children need to get a good start in life.
A gorilla’s typical gestation period is eight and a half months and, therefore, it is predicted that Kiki will give birth between late September and December of 2010.
Kiki’s pregnancy was confirmed through an over-the-counter home pregnancy test, the same tests that humans use.
