New Bedford Pier Power

New Bedford is getting a $1 million federal grant to make its working waterfront more environmentally friendly.

The grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be used to install electric power hookups on two of the port's piers so fishing vessels can run on electricity instead of diesel-powered generators when in port.

Reducing the reliance on generators will reduce diesel emissions and is expected to save the fishing industry a significant amount of money in fuel and other costs.

Steamship Pier and Coal Pocket Pier will be equipped with 16 electric power pedestals that will be able to power about 100 vessels.
