GOP looks at nat'l debt in radio address

A Georgia senator says that as the United States celebrates Independence Day, the national debt is one of the most dangerous threats confronting the country.

In the weekly Republican radio and online address, Sen. Saxby Chambliss says the country's $13 trillion debt will leave the U.S. vulnerable and force future generations to "pay higher taxes to foot the bill for Democrats' out-of-control spending."

Sounding a familiar theme, Chambliss criticized President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats for spending money the country doesn't have even as its citizens clip coupons and pinch pennies.

Chambliss says that while 43 cents of every government dollar spent is borrowed, "Congress and this White House still continue to splurge."

He says the money would be better spent on national defense or returned to taxpayers.
