Reported Shark Sighting Off Fairhaven Ends Up As False Alarm

FAIRHAVEN (CBS) – A reported shark sighting forced Fairhaven Police to shut down all the beaches in town Saturday afternoon as a precaution. The sighting later turned out to be unfounded, police said.

They initially said a shark was spotted off Hacker Street Beach just after 1 p.m.

As a result, they closed that beach and the three others in Fairhaven - Fort Phoenix, Sconticut Neck and West Island.

But Fairhaven and New Bedford Harbormasters searched the area and found nothing and the beaches were reopened.
