Hingham High School Cancels Classes Friday After Early Morning Fire

HINGHAM (CBS) - Classes were canceled at Hingham High School after a fire there early Friday morning.

Flames broke out in a classroom around 5:15 a.m. and were contained to that room by the sprinkler system. No one was hurt.

Deputy Fire Chief William Powers said there was still heavy water and smoke damage throughout the building. Smoke could be seen pouring out of a second-floor window and firefighters were on the roof after sunrise.

"The single classroom was on the second floor, unfortunately, the smoke does spread through the hallways. A second alarm was pulled for manpower, due to the extensive smoke," said Powers.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious. While the official cause is unknown, Powers said a VCR in a cabinet may be to blame.

"I graduated from this very high school in 1982. The guys did a great job. Thank God nobody was injured and the fire happened when nobody was here," Powers said.

When asked if there will be classes Monday, Powers said, "We're not sure about next week."
