The 12-year-old was taken to an area hospital, but his injuries are considered non-life threatening. Police seized a small knife that the suspect had concealed.

Following the incident, the school was ordered to shelter in place "out of an abundance of caution."

"There was a kid who said he wanted to stab someone but I didn't actually believe it," one student told WBZ-TV.

"A kid got stabbed and the kid tried to run, but he got caught," another student added.

The student accused in the stabbing will face discipline from the school and may also face charged in Lowell Juvenile Court.

Police said the attack was not random and appeared to be isolated.

Parents told WBZ-TV they were happy with how the school handled the incident, adding they were informed the whole time of what was happening. Some parents came to pick up their children from school following the incident.
