FITCHBURG (CBS) – A woman was fatally stabbed Tuesday night in Fitchburg while her three children were nearby.

Police say it happened on Wanoosnoc Road late Tuesday night.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early said 34-year-old Jennifer Narvaez-Colon was found lying in the road with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Wanda Gonzalez, 33, was found in the apartment with stab wounds to her head and neck. She was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Three of Narvaez-Colon's children were with neighbors when police arrived. They will be interviewed by investigators. Early said that at one point, the children were in the road trying to help their mother.

Gonzalez was arraigned from her hospital bed at UMass Worcester on charges of domestic assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Investigators say this is an isolated event and expect more serious charges once an autopsy is complete.

The victim, her children, and the suspect all moved to Fitchburg together from Puerto Rico after losing everything in Hurricane Maria.
