BOSTON (CBS) – One person was killed and two others were seriously injured in a crash on the Mass. Pike eastbound in Brighton.

The crash happened when two people got out of a pickup truck to secure a load of scrap metal on a trailer. State Police say a white BMW crashed into the back of the trailer, killing one person and seriously injuring the other.

Police say the truck stopped in the right travel lane in an area without a breakdown lane.

The driver of the truck, a 20-year-old Everett man, died at the scene. The passenger in the truck, a 25-year-old Everett man, and the driver of the BMW, a 19-year-old Revere man, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was backed up for several miles while police investigated the crash.
