Ceremonies Across Mass. To Honor Those Killed In 9/11 Attacks

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — Massachusetts is planning to honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks 15 years ago.

There will be a wreath-laying ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the permanent memorial located in the Boston Public Garden.

The annual name-reading ceremony of the more than 200 people with Massachusetts connections who died in the attacks will be moved indoors to the House Chamber due to forecasts of rainy weather. The ceremony typically takes place on the Statehouse lawn. The ceremony will begin at 8:30a.m. and will stream live on CBSBoston.com.

At 9:30 a.m., there will be the annual memorial service inside the chamber of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

There will also be the awarding of the Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery.

Sweeney, an Acton resident, was a flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11, the first of two planes hijacked from Boston. She is credited with discreetly contacting authorities and providing key information about the hijackers.

At 12:00p.m., as part of the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund 9/11 Service Project, volunteers will assemble military care packages and write letters of support to our troops at the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

The Red Sox, the American Red Cross, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will host the 14th annual Day of Remembrance Blood Drive at Fenway Park from 7:30a.m. to 2:30p.m.

The public is also invited to join firefighters and families of fallen firefighters at Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial Annual Ceremony at the State House at 3p.m. The event will begin with a firefighter and bagpiper procession from the Boston Common at 2:30p.m.
