Snakeskin Found In Maine Woods Belonged To Anaconda, Expert Says
WESTBROOK, Maine (CBS) – An expert has determined that a 12-foot snakeskin, which was found in Maine near where multiple sightings of a massive snake have been reported, belongs to an anaconda.
The Bangor Daily News reported on Tuesday that a University of Texas herpetologist who ran genetic testing on a snakeskin earlier this month said it is a "100 percent match" for an anaconda.
In June, police reported seeing a snake eating a large animal, estimating the snake to be at least 10 feet long.
Last week, a man said he snapped a photo of the snake in Westbrook's Riverbank Park.
That sighting came just days after the snakeskin was found at a nearby boat launch.
According to the Bangor Daily News, Westbrook Police said on Tuesday that it is unclear if the snakeskin was placed there, or if it belongs to the snake that has been dubbed "Wessie."
It is illegal to own an anaconda in Maine.
