Malcolm Mitchell Returns To Patriots Practice, Just Four Days After Scary Arm Injury

BOSTON (CBS) -- When Malcolm Mitchell went down last Thursday night at Gillette Stadium, many spectators feared the worst. It did not look good

However, the initial reports after the game were positive, and now on Monday, Mitchell has surpassed even the most optimistic outlooks by returning to the practice field.

Mitchell suffered a dislocated elbow after making his fourth catch of his preseason debut against the Saints, and the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe reported that Mitchell "could be out for four weeks." Yet it took just four days for Mitchell to return to the practice field, in full pads.

Of course, he's unlikely to be engaged in any heavy physical contact for the time being, but the fact that he's able to get in some work on the practice field bodes well for his chances of being a contributor once the regular season begins on Sept. 11.

Mitchell, a fourth-round pick out of Georgia, caught four passes for 55 yards against the Saints.

Returning quickly from injuries has been a common theme in Foxboro this summer. Julian Edelman was back on the practice field in rainy conditions one day after having a scare with his surgically repaired foot. Linebacker Rob Ninkovich returned to the practice field on Sunday, less than a week after tearing his triceps. Both Edelman and Ninkovich were limited in their activity, but they nevertheless set a tone for the wounded in Patriots camp.
