Two People Rescued From House Fire In Brockton

BROCKTON (CBS) -- Firefighters said there were no working fire alarms inside a Brockton house that caught fire Thursday morning.

The Brockton Fire Department said two people were rescued from the home.

Crews responded to the fire on Howland Street shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday.

Six people live in the home. Firefighters said two of them were home and asleep inside the house at the time--and one person wasn't even aware of the fire until he was hit with water from a firefighter's hose.

Firefighters busted in the front door, and were able to get the two people out. They were able to contain the fire to the top floor of the home.

John Hume lives across the street.

"The whole thing was flames coming out of there," he told WBZ-TV's Bill Shields. "I was mostly concerned about the people in there. I know they've got kids over there ... fortunately they all got out in one piece."

The owner of the home refused to talk to WBZ about the lack of working alarms

In addition to the non-functioning smoke detectors, fire officials were concerned about the three bedrooms they found in the basement of the home that did not have any outside egress.

No firefighters were injured.
