Just A Drill: Fenway Park Will Be Site Of Simulated Terror Attacks On Sunday

BOSTON (CBS) – If you hear gunshots and explosions coming from Fenway Park on Sunday, there's no reason to be alarmed.

The Boston Police Department, The Department Of Homeland Security and U.S. Army researchers will be conducting a "Full Scale Counterterrorism Exercise" in and around the ballpark on Sunday morning from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The drill will include simulated explosions and "multiple rounds of realistic-sounding, simulated gunshots." There will also be a heavy presence of first responders and actors around Fenway.

Authorities are advising people to avoid the Fenway area because there will be a heavy impact on traffic. The Red Sox will be in Minnesota to play the Twins over the weekend.

The exercise will close Yawkey Way from Brookline Avenue to Boylston Street, and Van Ness Street from Ipswich Street to Richard B. Ross Way.

"The opportunity to participate in an exercise that tests preparedness and cutting-edge technologies in real time is a big advantage for us," said Red Sox Director of Security and Emergency Services Charlie Cellucci in a statement. "Fan safety is a topic we continually discuss and evaluate, and by participating in this exercise, led by Boston Police alongside state and federal agencies, we hope to gain valuable insight that may help enhance how we keep visitors safe at Fenway Park."
