Police Seek 3 Suspects In Connection With Attempted Armed Robbery, Assault At Tufts

MEDFORD (CBS) -- Police are looking for three suspects in connection with an attempted armed robbery and assault with a knife late Friday night at Tufts University in Medford.

Tufts and Medford police officers received a call about the incidents around 11 p.m. on College Avenue near Cousens Gym. The suspects, who were riding bicycles, chased after the victim through the gym parking lot and attacked him on a foot path near the Tufts athletic fields before running away, police say.

Officers searched for the males, but they could not be found.

The University sent out an alert to students, who found this attack particularly concerning.

"Usually they're unarmed. It's surprising there was a knife involved," Tufts student Kalina Allen told WBZ-TV's Katie Brace. "There's kind of a wealth distribution gap issue in the area, so it's not terribly uncommon. There also have been break-ins."

Fellow Tufts student Chan Kang says, "I think after a while you get a little numb to immune to it (the alerts), but I think this one was a lot bigger than other ones. This is a lot scarier."

The victim, a man who is not a Tufts student, was taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries. His current condition is unknown.

Two of three suspects have been described as white male teenagers, standing about 5-foot-7-inches tall, with one having blond hair and the other having dark hair.

The third suspect is described as being a black male teen, standing about 5-foot-7-inches tall.

The incident remains under investigation by Medford and Tufts police. Anyone with information is asked to call Tufts Police at (617) 627-6911.

WBZ-TV's Katie Brace contributed to this report.
