UNH Joins Growing List Of Schools To Ban Hoverboards

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — The University of New Hampshire is joining the growing list of colleges that ban hoverboards on campus.

Foster's Daily Democrat reports (bit.ly/1RMD9Fc) that university officials announced the ban in an email to students and staff this week.

UNH Police Chief Paul Dean and Dean of Students John Kirkpatrick say they are concerned about the safety of the transportation devices, which have been known to burst into flames due to combustible lithium-ion batteries.

The Associated Press reported earlier this month that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has investigated 28 hoverboard-related fires in 19 different states.

More than 30 universities and three major airlines — Delta, American Airlines, and United Airlines — have banned hoverboards. They're also banned on New York City streets.
