Hingham Native Released After Being Held In Iran

VIENNA (CBS) — A Hingham native and Boston University graduate was released after being held as a hostage in Iran.

He was on a plane out of Iran on Saturday.

Matt Trevithick was held for 40 days in Evin Prison Tehran, according to his mother Amelia Newcomb.

"We're very excited. We were happy to hear Matt's voice today. We are thrilled he is out of Iran," she says.

Trevithick went to Iran in September for a four-month intensive language program at the Dehkhoda Institute, which is affiliated with Tehran University.

He previously spent four years in Afghanistan. Trevithick most recently was in Turkey, where he co-founded the Syria Research and Evaluation Organization.

Trevithick graduated from Boston University in 2008, where he was on the rowing team. He helped push forward the Iraqi rowing team.

While living in Afghanistan, he worked on building a team there too.

After being released, he just wants to get back to living his life, Newcomb says.

"We are just looking forward to seeing him," she said.

It's unclear why Trevithick was taken hostage. He wasn't one of the four US hostages involved in the hostage swap between the US and Iran.
