Medford Police Officers Save Babies, Mom From Fire

MEDFORD (CBS) -- Twin five-month-olds Luan and Lauren were fast asleep on their aunt's couch Monday night, and their mom and dad couldn't have been more relieved.

"I'm good now; cause nothing happened to them," Carlos Oliveira says. "Yeah, so good now."

It was a rough day for mom and her babies, but she is just thankful they are all alive

"Now everything is OK cause my babies are OK," Adma Rodriguez says. "I'm OK."

The three were home around eight Monday morning when a fire started in the basement. The babies were in their cribs on the second floor and thankfully that's when Medford police arrived on the scene.

"The gentleman on the first floor was outside waving his arms and screaming," said Medford Police Officer Paul Giortano. "The front door was open that's when I ran in."

With the Medford Fire Department tied up at another fire, Officers Paul Giortano and Sheila Quinn got there first. Officer Giortano ran right in.

"I ran up the second floor," Officer Giortano said. "There was black smoke in the hallway and I said 'hand me the infants, hand me the infants.'"

Oliveira was at work when he got the frantic phone call from his wife

"She said 'come home now the house is on fire,'" Oliveira recalled.

But when the panicked father got home, his new babies and his wife were outside and safe.

Four days before Christmas, and this family knows, Medford Police gave them the only gift that matters.

"I thank God the police officers pulled them out," Oliveira said. "They did so much."

They are still investigating what caused the fire.
