Patriots Will Reportedly Sign Kick-Returner Damaris Johnson

BOSTON (CBS) -- After cutting Chris Harper on Monday, the Patriots reportedly intend to fill his roster spot with another return man.

Hopefully he knows when it's the right time to call for a fair catch.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss reported Tuesday that the Patriots intend to sign wide receiver/return specialist Damaris Johnson, who worked out with the team on Monday.

Johnson is a three-year NFL veteran having played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2012-13 and the Houston Texans in 2014. At 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds he's another slot receiver, with 52 career receptions for 601 yards and a touchdown. His lone career touchdown came last season with Houston, when he had career-highs in receptions (31) and receiving yards (331).

The 26-year old has returned 47 punts in his career with a 9.5 yard average and one touchdown. He's also fielded 23 kickoffs, averaging 25.5 yards per return.

With Julian Edelman on the shelf for the rest of the regular season and Danny Amendola on the mend, the Patriots can use any added depth they can get in the return game.
