Keller @ Large: 2015 National Turkeys Of The Year

BOSTON (CBS) - Most of the time, turkeys - the duds, flops and losers who gobble their way across the headlines each year - are a source of annoyance or an object of derision. But not always.

Pete Carroll

Last February, the Seattle Seahawks had the ball within yards of a Super Bowl-winning touchdown against the Patriots, and the best running back in the game, Marshawn Lynch, to hand it to. But coach Pete Carroll instead made an historic turkey of a call, opting for a pass that was picked off by Malcolm Butler at the goal line to seal with title for New England. Thanks, Pete, for that very early Christmas present!

Johnny Depp

Under the more traditional definition of a turkey, actor Johnny Depp made a fool of himself and gratuitously insulted many members of our community still traumatized by the damage done by serial killer Whitey Bulger when he waxed poetic about the murderer at the premiere of the movie "Black Mass."

"There's a kind heart in there...there's a man who loved," said Depp in an apparent attempt to show off his deep grasp of nuance. And when Depp said he was "glad" Bulger escaped capture for so many years, he cemented his footprints on the foolish Hollywood turkey walk of fame.

Confederate Flag

It's a shame it took so long, but after seeing photos of the mass-murderer of parishoners at a Charleston, S.C. church waving the Confederate flag, South Carolina officials finally retired that turkey from public display. Good riddance.

DeflateGate

And finally, was there any bigger turkey this year than Deflategate and the bureaucrats, lawyers and media sycophants who peddled it? The air went out of their balloon, and Tom Brady had the last laugh.

Pass the stuffing, please!
