11-Year-Old Saves Family From Carbon Monoxide Scare In Nashua

NASHUA, N.H. (CBS) – An 11-year-old girl is being praised for saving her family from carbon monoxide poisoning Tuesday night.

The girl, who has not been identified, noticed an unusual odor and people suddenly not feeling well in her home on Northwood Drive in Nashua just after 8 p.m.

She called her father who told her to get everyone outside and call 911.

"Her action most certainly prevented what would have been a family tragedy," Nashua Deputy Fire Chief George Walker said in a statement.

Investigators found extremely high levels of CO near the furnace, which turned out to be the source of the fumes. It was shut down and the house was ventilated.

Five people were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for various levels of CO exposure.

It could have been life-threatening, had it not been discovered by the girl, Walker said.

There were no carbon monoxide detectors in the house.
