Winthrop High School Football Team Forfeits Game Amid Locker Room Video Probe

WINTHROP (CBS) -- The Winthrop High School football team is suspending all activities and forfeiting its next game after video was taken of a player changing in the boys locker room.

The incident happened Monday night and authorities were made aware of it via an online tip line, officials said. One football player has been suspended, and police told WBZ-TV that the investigation involves up to 10 players.

Officials did not say how many people may have seen the video.

"We felt that it's important that we will not tolerate or condone this type of behavior," Winthrop Superintendent John Macero said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. "Therefore we feel at this time it's best to suspend this activity going forward this weekend."

The Winthrop football team was scheduled to play Gloucester on Friday night.

Police said they won't decide if criminal charges are necessary until the investigation is complete. The incident is not being classified as hazing or bullying at this time.

School officials said players will participate in a diversion program to make sure this doesn't happen again.

"I was very surprised to hear this happened," Macero said. "And I will tell you I'm extremely disappointed."
