Phantom Gourmet: Movie Theater Candy Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased five boxes of movie theater candy at a local supermarket. The classic contenders were Dots, Good & Plenty, Milk Duds, Raisinets, and Sno-Caps. See if you can guess which Oscar-worthy treat ended up at the top of the food chain.

good-plenty
Good & Plenty (WBZ)

Good & Plenty finished in last place. This package of old school licorice candy is like a box office bomb. The pink and white pill shaped pieces feature a sugary sweet coating wrapped around unappealing black licorice. While Phantom certainly didn't find this candy 'good', there definitely is 'plenty' of it packed into every box.

milk-duds
Milk Duds (WBZ)

Next up are Milk Duds. Made with lackluster chocolate and rock hard caramel, these unappealing pieces rush out of the box like an avalanche of awful. The forgettable chocolate coating quickly gives way to a terrible caramel that makes a cement like seal on the back of your teeth, making Milk Duds a dentist's dream and a moviegoer's nightmare.

dots-candy
Dots (WBZ)

In a shocking plot twist, Dots actually finished in the middle of the pack. These fruit-flavored gum drops were a lot better than Phantom expected, mostly because they were a lot softer than he remembered. A waxy outer coating gives way to a burst of fruit flavors including cherry, strawberry, lemon, lime, and orange. But mining for your favorite is a challenge, thanks to the small opening on the box.

raisinets-candy
Raisinets (WBZ)

Raisinets are the runner up. An absurd amount of real milk chocolate coats sweet juicy raisins in this addictive treat. And while the fruit and chocolate combination is a classic, the lack of textural difference left Phantom bored long before he finished the box. On the upside, since Raisinets are made with real fruit, you can feel a little better about eating them.

sno-caps
Sno-Caps (WBZ)

At the top of the food chain are Sno-Caps. For a snack that seems so simple, these things are sensational. These semi-sweet chocolate nonpareils are sweet and crunchy thanks to the candied snow dots, and rich and smooth due to the high quality chocolate. They're great on their own, and even better mixed into a bowl of popcorn for the ultimate salty sweet treat. That's why Sno-Caps are at the top of the food chain.
